In the article “Learning a Foreign Language,” Michael (2018) emphasizes that bilingualism presents a myriad of self and societal development opportunities and improves life quality. A foreigner is likely to enjoy a vacation and save a lot of money when he/she has a grasp of the native language. People with multiple languages to their name also stand higher chances of employment and have a competitive advantage. Bilinguals can also handle tasks efficiently and solve challenging life situations due to enhanced mental intelligence. Additionally, learning foreign languages helps to forge stronger relationships and convey confidential messages in appropriate circumstances. Learning a second language is pivotal in connecting people, bolstering communication, and encouraging universality (Michael, 2018). (114 words)

I entirely agree that learning a foreign language promotes people’s well-being and shapes a better life experience. An individual who communicates in more than one language can comfortably maneuver in difficult situations and adapt appropriately to a new environment. Bilinguals can sometimes bend things to their will and achieve what they desire since other people quickly receive them. For instance, a foreigner is likely to get favors when he/she communicates eloquently in a foreign language. Research documents learning a foreign language helps to counter-attack a decline in cognitive function in older people. The process of acquiring a second language, understanding, interpreting, and applying the vocabulary and grammar to convey meaning has proven to stimulate older adults’ cognitive abilities (Klimova, 2018).  Learning a second language provides a safer and economical way of treating neurological malfunctions such as dementia among the aging population. Therefore, apart from increasing employment eligibility and cementing relationships, bilingualism keeps families happier by lowering neurological malfunction.

However, the article overlooks the challenges of learning a second language and fails to provide data to enhance its credibility. Although the writing successfully persuades the readers that bilingualism reaps enormous advantages, it assumes that learning another language can be attained by a willing mentality. According to Kroll and Dusiass (2017), there are mythologies linked to bilingualism, such as impairing children’s cognitive development and language during early infancy and associating it with language incompetency. The article is insufficient in disapproving critiques and mentions that the right ‘mindset’ is the only requirement to learn a new language, which is not enough. Research also shows that people of higher intelligence tend to learn multiple languages quickly (Wold, 2006). What about people with lower intelligence? Does it mean that a monolingual cannot perform tasks like their counterparts? The article fails to address the challenges of acquiring a new language and therefore does not entirely convince readers. Bilingualism is an essential element of solidifying relationships and promoting personal, economic, and national development. Understanding multiple languages increases an individual’s employment viability and enables people to adapt to new environments. The health of the old population has also significantly improved courtesy of learning a second language. Bilingualism considerably lowers medical expenses among older adults and gives them a quality of life in the advanced ages. However, more research and detailed explanation are required to encourage people to learn a new language and guide them to overcome challenges. (88 words)
