Question and Answer based on a movie

For the 2nd exam you’ll need to make a few decisions before you begin.

Before you take the exam you need to mentally ask yourself the questions below:

1st question: do you want to take your exam on Hobbes or Machiavelli?

If you choose Hobbes here is what to study: Be able to ID the 5 steps to creating a social contract and identifying a sovereign within the movie.

If you choose Machiavelli here is what to study: be able to ID 2 strategies  Machiavelli said you need to gain power. Also be able to ID 2 strategies used to keep power.

2nd Question: Which movie do you want to analyze?

If you choose Hobbes here are the movies you’ll be able to watch: Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, & Elizabeth.

If you choose Machiavelli here are the movies you’ll be able to watch: Miss Sloan, The Godfather, Elizabeth, & Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

3rd step: Once you know which philosopher you want to use and which movie you want to analyze then watch your selected movie while keeping in mind what you should keep an eye out for (state of nature, social contract, gaining power, keeping power, etc).

Finally, do NOT choose a movie that you already analyzed for exam 1. For example, a lot of folks picked the Dark Knight, those people would now be required to pick a different movie to analyze.

This is due before 11:30pm Sunday, 3/13 . I will not accept late exams, so don’t procrastinate.

The sets of movies and questions are below:

For those that choose Hobbes:

Only pick 1 set (a set = movie & question) to answer.

Lastly, don’t forget that if a question has 2 parts then each part is weighted equally. In otherwords, if part 1 of the question has a one page answer, but pt.2 only has a paragraph, then obviously pt.2 would receive little to no credit. So give equal attention to both parts.

Movie: Mad Max: Fury Road. Question: describe how the people live in a state of nature. Secondly, give a step by step account that illustrates how Furiosa becomes a new sovereign.

Movie: Dark Knight Rises. Question: Describe how Bane causes Gotham city to fall into a state of nature. Secondly, give a step by step account that illustrates how Gotham city was able to establish a new social contract.

Movie: Elizabeth. Question: give a step by step account that illustrates how Elizabeth and Walsingham establish a new social contract for England.

Movie: Tenet. Question: describe how the character of The Protagonist created a social contract; secondly, demonstrate how The Protagonist is the Sovereign.

For those who chose Machiavelli:

Only pick 1 set (a set = movie & question) to answer.

Warning: be specific! When i say be specific I mean that you don’t simply say, “Susan used the strategy of X to gain power.” You would need to say, “Susan did the strategy of X to gain power when she chose to do A, which then allowed her to do B, which opened the doors to C.” That’s what I mean by be specific

Lastly, don’t forget that if a question has 2 parts then each part is weighted equally. In otherwords, if part 1 of the question has a one page answer, but pt.2 only has a paragraph, then obviously pt.2 would receive little to no credit. So give equal attention to both parts.

Movie: Miss Sloan. Question: Identify at least 3 strategies that Miss Sloan used to gain and keep power.

Movie: Elizabeth. Question: Identify 2 strategies Walsingham used to give Elizabeth more power. Secondly, identify at least 2 strategies Walsingham used to keep power.

Movie: The Godfather. Question: Identify 2 strategies Michael  used to gain power. Secondly, identify at least 2 strategies Michael used to keep power.

Movie: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Question: Identify 2 strategies Palpatine used to gain power. Secondly, identify at least 2 strategies Palpatine used to keep power.

Cheers!
