Once the person has been selected, identify a challenging behaviour. Since this is an assessment and the strategies developed will not be implemented, please select a challenging behavior that is significant for the person, but is non-violent in nature.

After you have written proper operational definition for the challenging behavior, you will then conduct a series of assessment and observations of the individual. After the functional assessments are complete, you will summarize the functional assessment information and write a hypothesis statement that reflects the meaning of the behaviour. You will also recommend at least one simple test h as a functional analysis of the hypothesis. You will then be ready to recommend an intervention strategy. This intervention strategy will consist of two suggestions. One must be a strategy on the teaching of a positive alternative replacement behaviour. The second recommended strategy can be an antecedent or consequence change for immediate behavior reduction.

1. Introduction and target behaviour
While maintaining confidentiality, describe the individual. This section should be no more than one paragraph and should include information such as gender, approximate age, level of independence, descriiption of current environment, and other pertinent information. In one sentence identify the challenging behaviour to be considered.
2. Operational Definition
In a few lines and using objective, observable, measurable language, describe the challenging behaviour that has been identified as the target behaviour. If you have taken fundamentals of educational assistants , use the information on operational definitions from that course.
0. Functional Assessment
Use one type of indirect assessment (interviews are the most recommended) and one type of direct assessment ABC observations are the most recommended). Indicate date, time, relationship, and any other pertinent information. Summarize the findings of these assessments. This section should be 2 or 3 paragraphs. You may wish to attach your interview questions and/or the ABC observations as appendices at the end of the report. Also note that the more data you have from the assessments, the more likely you can develop an accurate hypothesis. It is not sufficient to put your ABC observations and your interviews into the functional assessment. They must be summarized, meaning you are to talk about the patterns that are present. Your discussion is looking for patterns of what is being gained. You are to select what is the strongest function, the most likely. Since you are to choose only one function, you must justify why you rejected other functions that may appear to be present. eg. I rejected the function of gaining adult attention as being the strongest function because event though Child X needs the adults to give him his toy back, adult attention seems less likely: he gets a lot of healthy adult attention in his world.
3. Hypothesis statement
In a single sentence, indicate what you think the behaviour means for this person in terms of what communicative function is operating. The statement must address the antecedents and/or consequences that influence the challenging behaviour.
4. Functional Analysis
Propose one positive and one negative test that you could use to test the validity of your hypothesis statement. This should be no more than one-two paragraphs.
5. Positive Intervention Ideas
Assuming that your hypothesis statement is correct, identify at least two intervention strategies that you could use that focus on teaching a positive, alternative behaviour that has the same communicative intent (function) as the challenging behaviour. One of the interventions could be an antecedent change, but at least one must be on teaching a replacement behaviour that has the same communicative intention (function) as the challenging behaviour.
6. Reflection
In three paragraphs, reflect on what you learned during this assignment.
