Job Portfolio: read the job portfolio assignment instructions here before posting to your group forum

Paper details:

For this assignment, you will be collating and editing a collection of documents related to job applications, resulting in a job portfolio–a Word doc or PDF that you will submit to the assignment area. Include hyperlinks and/or screen shots in your document where appropriate. Or, if you prefer, you may make a web-based portfolio (webfolio). I’ve provided examples of each in the Week 7 area of our course site.

Chapter 7 in our text will be your most useful resource, pages 252-253 are specifically about job portfolios and webfolios, what to include, what not to include. Make your choices among these lists of suggestions. It is fine (even desirable) to include screen shots of items that are located on a website you have created. So though a webfolio is not a requirement, it is the way business is heading so it’s good at least to consider links to web materials an option. Down the line you might want to move in the direction of a webfolio–and a portfolio is a step toward that.

A bit of background on why our text and course includes this:

Some employers require a portfolio as part of the hiring process (though often not in the first stages).
Having a portfolio as an organized, ready file to draw on when you need it is a valuable professional resource.
Like a resume, it is a “living text,” always morphing as you move through your career.
For many of us, it is a private archive that can be edited and shared when the need arises.
It showcases who you are and what you’ve accomplished and predicts what you can do for companies and organizations that you want to work for.
The first task is to decide which documents to use and what links to offer, making sure you revise and refine as necessary. The audience for this is a prospective employer and the purpose is to present yourself as a strong candidate.

Length: Please look at the examples in our text of each component of your portfolio to understand the effective length for each, keeping in mind the overall length so as not to overwhelm your audience with items that seem redundant, extra, dated, or not applicable. Long is not the goal. Succinct and user friendly are.

Please Note: If this assignment is not suited to your professional development because you are not planning to go on the job market–perhaps you are planning to start your own business instead–please let me know. I am open to your putting together a portfolio that represents your business plan, or something that you deem more pertinent. I’m sure the group feedback and discussion this week can help you even if you take another approach. So please be in touch if you have an alternative portfolio in mind.

Please submit it as a Word or PDF document, with your name, our class info. and the date in the header (no need for a separate title page) and make sure the you label the document with your name so it will appear saved on a desk top as yours rather than “assignment” or some such (this helps).

Please email me any questions you have as you work on this. I am happy to help!
