Evidence-based practice (EBP) Essay

Nursing

Evidence-based practice (EBP) refers to the careful and sensible use of best available evidence in combination with clinical proficiency and patient values to optimize nursing care in the diagnosis of infections. This use of the practice in the diagnosis of the current pandemic corona infection and the effectiveness it can deliver is seen below.

In the diagnosis of corona infection, the best evidence could be sourced from empirical evidence, experimentation and collection of data from cases of Corona report, ethical evidence, personal evidence, aesthetic evidence, opinions from experts and scientific principles. Use of this evidence in evaluating nursing is significant since it helps in clinical decision making, enhancing safety, minimizing transmission and increasing recoveries from the acute respiratory disease (JoAnn, 2017). The model of a fruitful EBP on the diagnosis of COVID 19 virus infection requires selection of a practice topic example-increasing the discharge of virus-free patients, assessing the evidence, evaluation of safety and finally implementation of the practice in the quarantine wards. Also, EBP ensures nurses are in the know of Corona updates due to access to credible information about medical protocols for patient care.

To come up with a database relevant to EBP in the diagnosis of corona virus a grasp of the history of the now global and rapidly evolving pandemic is essential. The mysterious Corona was reported as unknown pneumonia to the World Health Organization China office on 31st December 2019. From that point, cases have escalated to millions, deaths over 2000 and over 14000 cases recovered. This outbreak called for immediate clinical research to inform the public health action before a further spread. However, attempts to contain the pandemic failed, and that’s how COVID-19 earned fame since it is an easily transmitted virus. The information available on COVID 19 was analyzed to provide an evidence-based model for efficient clinical research. A systematic review was then carried out in 2018 to identify preliminary research questions for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-related coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-related coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Three bibliographic databases were scrutinized to identify clinical studies published on SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV in the outbreak setting.

In February 2020, the available information on COVID-19 was analyzed and contrasted to the results of the SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV systematic review. The results gave identifications of Clinical characterization, prognosis, diagnosis, clinical management, viral pathogenesis, epidemiological characterization, infection prevention and control/transmission, susceptibility, psychosocial, and aetiology (Harris et al., 2020). However, the clinical research on COVID-19 contains a niche and only suggests follow up of standardized protocol.

Finally, nurses are the prominent advocates in the progress and execution of policies involving covid-19 pandemic, and they should be equipped with relevant resources. Resources such as protective equipment, RCNI learning modules, clinical articles, library resources, electronic databases and testing kits are essential for quality and efficient service (RCNi, 2020). In addition, are reliable means of communication is necessary to ensure nurses effort in fighting the pandemic is fruitful. Nurses should be in a position to easily inform the public with the government help the standards to follow and the updates on the COVID-19 to stop transmission. In conclusion, it can be seen that with relevant databases and adequate resources to EBP a desirable outcome in the diagnosis of COVID-19 is possible. Therefore, EBP is most effective in nursing when it is applied.
