For this discussion compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis (pp. 52-4 of your textbook). How are they similar and how are they different? Your discussion should include, in what kind of cell these processes take place, how many cell divisions occur in each process, how many daughter cells are produced at the end of these processes, and what is the chromosome count in those daughter cells. Finally, for the purposes of evolution (the passing on of variation from parent to offspring) which of these two processes would have more evolutionary significance, Why?
How does this story represent the power of mutations, natural selection and genetic diversity? Explain the relationship on why heterozygote carriers of sickle cell trait have relative immunity to malaria. How is this an example of a balanced polymorphism and the heterozygote advantage?
