below you will see more expansion about the assignments.

Steps in Critical Analysis
.Read the study once
•Read the study again, with a “critical eye” and take notes
–When we talk about conducting a “critical” analysis or a “critique”, we are asking you to assess and evaluate something – is it good or bad?
•Think of a movie critic “I give it 5 stars!”
–You should be looking at how the study was designed and how the variables were measured
•Internal validit
y•External validity
•Construct validity
•Once you have identified the characteristics of the study and decided whether it is high/low/moderate on internal/external validity, and whether the variables indicate acceptable/poor/good construct validity, you will form an opinion
–ALL studies have some good and some bad – no study is perfect but some are better than others
–While acknowledging both the good and the bad, you MUST come down on one side or the other with your opinion on its OVERALL quality
•“While this study has some strengths, overall is was poorly conducted”
•“While this study has some weaknesses, overall it is a rigorous, high-quality study”
The rest of your paper will entail describing what makes it good or bad – you have to describe the “evidence”

Structure of Critical Analysis
•The sections of your paper should begin with:
–An introduction paragraph
–Some body paragraphs that follow the grading rubric
–A conclusion paragraph
•Your introduction paragraph needs to begin with a broad introduction about the topic in general, then narrow down more to the specific study you are critiquing
•Your introduction paragraph should end with your overall opinion – this is called a “thesis statement”
Body Paragraphs

•These are the most important sections of the paper – you MUST review concepts previously taught in class, including:
–What study characteristics make it high or low on internal validity
–What study characteristics make it high or low on external validity
–How you know whether measures of variables are reliable and valid
What the difference is between an independent variable, dependent variable, and mediating variable
What an “operational definition” of a variable is
•In addition to the rubric, make sure you look at BOTH the example A paper AND the template I gave, to help guide you through this.
